My 'work' menu item returns a gallery of categories as I expect. I have set this page as my home page but it instead returns the text for the categories instead of showing the thumbnails.
Two different behaviours for the same post. I made a home page and added a section with post type 'works' but again, just text shows.

What am I doing wrong?

Great theme and thanks for the great upgrade but fyi when I downloaded the zip I didn't get the documentation and so went ahead updating my theme via ftp which then caused issues during your new 'auto' upgrade.
