Northeme is Shutting Down

After 13 years, Northeme is coming to an end

In 2012, I created Northeme with a simple goal: to provide WordPress themes that made building websites easier. Over the years, Northeme grew to include 9 premium and free themes, and they’ve been used by thousands of people. It’s been a long journey, and I’m grateful to everyone who supported Northeme and built their websites with it.

Northeme is winding down because the way websites are built with WordPress has fundamentally changed. In 2019, WordPress introduced the new block editor and, later, Full Site Editing (FSE), which shifted the market toward a new approach. Northeme themes are now considered “Classic Themes” and will eventually be seen as legacy. After reflecting on these developments, I made the decision this year to officially bring Northeme to a close.

Personally, I found the new FSE approach too convoluted at the time. It also went against my original idea of creating themes that made building websites and content simpler. The new approach encourages users to build their sites with the provided tools, rather than having the theme handle most of the heavy lifting, allowing users to adjust settings for simpler sites while enabling more advanced customization when needed. Furthermore, page builders like Elementor had already split the market, so I chose not to adapt Northeme to this new direction. Still, FSE is clearly the future of WordPress, and I’m sure it will continue to improve.

Because of these changes, Northeme gradually lost its potential, and after careful consideration this year, I’ve decided it’s time to officially bring it to a close.

Here’s what you can expect:

  • Northeme will remain online until June 2026
  • Compatibility updates and limited support will continue until then.
  • The site will be read-only and it will not be possible to purchase or renew licenses.
  • Any active license — or licenses that expired in 2025 — will be automatically extended until June 2026, free of charge.

This should give you enough time to plan a migration to another theme.

It’s been nearly 13 years since Northeme launched, and I believe it was a good run. Thank you for using the themes and for supporting this project all these years. I look forward to sharing my future ventures with you soon.
